Ewa Juszkiewicz is considered one of the best-known contemporary Polish artists.

The title of the exhibition, “Locks with Leaves and Swelling Buds,” is inspired by an 18th-century poem, specifically a quote from “Ode to Spring” by the renowned British poet Anna Laetitia Barbauld.

The exhibition features 15 paintings, including 5 new works that I created specifically for this beautiful, historic space.
This is Ewa Juszkiewicz’s solo exhibition, part of the Venice Art Biennale, where the Polish surrealist painter uses surreal elements such as folds of fabric, floral arrangements, or intricate hairstyles to obscure her subjects’ faces. Through this technique, she challenges conventional ideas of identity and subverts the patriarchal gaze inherent in historical women’s portraiture.

“I believe it essential to address the domination of the male narrative and reclaim the place of women in history”
