Invitation to the Voyage

Baltimore Museum of Art, Musée National d'Art Moderne Paris

This autumn, Fondation Beyeler in Riehen/Basel is set to host a groundbreaking retrospective on Henri Matisse – the first in Switzerland and the German-speaking world in nearly two decades!
Featuring a stunning array of approximately 80 works from prestigious European and American collections, the exhibition promises to showcase the evolution and richness of Matisse’s revolutionary artistry.

Drawing inspiration from Charles Baudelaire’s timeless poem “Invitation to the Voyage” (1857), the exhibition will explore the profound connections between Matisse’s oeuvre and the poetic motifs found within Baudelaire’s verses. From vibrant color palettes to themes of luxury and tranquility, Matisse’s work mirrors the essence of Baudelaire’s poetic vision.

With its emphasis on Matisse’s transformative influence on modern art, the exhibition celebrates his legacy as a trailblazer who revolutionized painting and sculpture with his bold use of color and form.

The first Matisse retrospective in Switzerland and the German-speaking world in almost 20 years.
