Suzanne Valadon.

A modern epic

Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) was a pioneering French painter and the first woman admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

Born Marie-Clémentine Valadon, she initially worked as a circus performer before an injury led her to modeling for renowned artists like Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec.

Valadon transitioned from muse to artist, developing a distinctive style characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and unflinching portrayals of the female form. Her work often depicted intimate domestic scenes and nudes, challenging the male-dominated art world.

Despite facing societal barriers, Valadon achieved critical acclaim and influenced future generations of artists, including her son, the painter Maurice Utrillo. Valadon revolutionized the depiction of the female nude in art through her paintings and prints, offering a profound and insightful portrayal of women’s experiences.

The exhibition will feature over 100 pieces, including 48 that will be displayed in Barcelona. These works consist of oil paintings on canvas and cardboard, drawings, prints, plaster and bronze sculptures, as well as various documentary materials. Together, they offer a comprehensive and contextualized retrospective of the career of a female artist who was a significant figure in Avant-garde Paris between 1910 and 1930.

Suzanne Valadon legacy endures as a testament to her resilience and artistic innovation.
